BoJack Horseman Creator Raises Money For Trans Charity By Releasing Scene That Netflix Cut Out of Fear of Upsetting David Fincher

In response to what he perceives as hypocrisy from Netflix due to their unwavering support for Dave Chappelle amid backlash for his pro-TERF comments, Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the mind behind BoJack Horseman, has released dialogue from a scene Netflix made him cut due to a caricature of David Fincher and raised $2000 for Trans Lifeline in the process.

At 2:31 PM yesterday (December 7), the showrunner took to Twitter, explaining his bafflement that Chappelle’s deal apparently allows him free rein of his subject matter, while BoJack was forced to eliminate a joke that the company worried might be at then-House of Cards executive producer David Fincher’s expense.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Still mystified that apparently Dave Chapelle’s deal is that he says whatever he wants and Netflix just has to air it, unedited. Is that normal, for comedians? Because Netflix once asked me to change a joke because they were worried it might upset David Fincher.</p>&mdash; Raphael Bob-Waksberg (@RaphaelBW) <a href="https://twitter.com/RaphaelBW/status/1468302193887354882?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 7, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Bob-Waksberg objected to the premise that Netflix had their “hands tied” when it came to the decisions made by their creators and declared he would share the cut scene if 100 people responded with pictures of donations they made to Trans Lifeline, a non-profit that offers financial support and mental health services to people in crisis in the trans community.

At 9:12 PM, Bob-Waksberg replied to the twitter thread with images of the script for the scene which was intended for “Say Anything,” the fourth episode of season one (the one with BoJack embarking on a week-long bender before getting a wakeup call via Princess Carolyn’s commercial shoot opportunity).

The scene revolves around a baby shower Princess Carolyn has been recruited by Brenda to organize for Kristin, two characters who never made it to screen. David Fincher, who is in attendance ruminates on being kicked off his film after the studio was informed that he had a crack addiction, a debacle which the bride herself orchestrated. In regards to a gift Fincher brought, Princess Carolyn makes reference to one of Fincher’s most iconic scenes by asking him, “What’s in the boooooooox?!”

David Fincher’s work for Netflix has provided the platform with some of their most acclaimed programming beginning with House of Cards in 2013, constituting the company’s venture into original content. Fincher would later show run the forensic thriller Mindhunter starting in 2016 and eventually bring Netflix his most recent feature film, Mank in 2020.

Bojack Horseman received notoriety during its six seasons for its unabashedly sincere handling of adult subjects like depression, PTSD, addiction, sexuality, and the human condition and  legitimized Netflix’s foray into animated series starting in 2014 to its end in 2018.

Just looked up the cut Fincher joke because I actually couldn't remember it. Turns out it was a whole scene! Netflix was right to note, it's a dumb scene. My point was it's silly for a network to pretend their hands are tied when it comes to the content they put on their network.
But if people want to see the controversial cut David Fincher bit from season one, I'll share it here if 100 people respond to this tweet with pics of donations they made today (any amount) to Trans Lifeline:
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO’S DONATED SO FAR! We are halfway there! Here’s some info on the scene to get you excited: it was originally written for episode 107, "Say Anything." It was early in the show's run and we were still getting out some kinks as far as tone and process.
CONTEXT: amidst Princess Carolyn’s busy day of agency mergers and projects falling apart, PC has ALSO been recruited by Brenda to organize a baby shower for Kristin. (Who are Brenda and Kristin? Apparently Princess Carolyn’s friends who would have surely become fan favorites.)
Can Princess Carolyn go to the baby shower and ALSO find a cool director for her new project? And might that cool director be someone who happened to be concurrently producing a different show with Netflix?! Only fifty more donations to find out!
We’re up to 99 donations! You folks are amazing! Just need one more donation to share a real dumb scene!
Yay! THANK YOU! I don't know if this scene is worth it, but you gave over $2000 to Trans Lifeline today and that's definitely worth it.
