This year’s Pirelli Calendar, a symbol of luxury lifestyle, has gone rock and roll. With its launch last night (Nov. 29), the calendar unveiled its 58th iteration shot by Canadian rock legend Bryan Adams and featuring a murderer’s row of music talent as subjects: St. Vincent, Kali Uchis, Saweetie, Cher, Normani, Jennifer Hudson, Iggy Pop, Grimes, Chinese-American rapper Bohan Phoenix, and Rita Ora.

The set is called “On the Road,” in reference to both touring life and Pirelli’s 150-year heritage as a leading tiremaker.

During the launch, Adams corresponded virtually from Italy as he is battling COVID for a second time in a month. “The musicians relive moments of life on tour, from the tension before a performance, to the breaks between rehearsals and concerts, through to the long journeys from one city to the next and the solitude of hotel rooms,” he explained. “So what I tried to do was to represent some of the aspects of it… for example, musicians never really see the front of the building, they see the back of the building, we see the stage door, we see the backstage area, we see the basement of a building… you go from the stage door to the car door to the hotel door to the train door to the bus door, so it’s a bunch of doors, but it’s always about travelling…”

The photos were snapped in Los Angeles, Capri, and Canada last summer. They are not only gorgeous, but imaginative.

St. Vincent graces the cover in traditional Daddy’s Home getup with a Pirelli-branded pick placed on her tongue. She also appeared virtually for an interview at the launch event. Saweetie is depicted pushing a cart of high-end luggage through a hotel lobby in Capri, Italy. Grimes photographed in a computer control room in L.A. was covered in chains and digital headgear and was assumingly given the camera to capture psychedelic long exposure shots.

Iggy Pop perhaps received the best snaps. Described as open to ideas during last night’s launch, an idea prompted from the set hairdresser led to the Godfather of Punk being covered in silver paint, a reference to photos taken of him in the 70s.

When asked by interviewer Victoria Cabello, “How do you direct someone like Iggy?” Adams simply replied, “You don’t.”

The calendar is produced with limited availability (around 20,000 are printed). Pirelli calendars are traditionally not available for purchase and instead given as a corporate gift to celebrities and long-time customers.

Bryan Adam’s second career as a photographer began at the age of 37. We was given Honorary Fellowship into the Royal Photographic Society in London and selected to photograph the Golden Jubilee in 2002. He’s also gained a reputation as a fashion and rock photographer, shooting many contemporaries and colleagues like Lemmy, Naomi Campbell, Amy Winehouse, Mick Jagger, Bryan Ferry, Morrissey, Tina Turner, and Shania Twain.

It was reported last week (Nov. 26) that Adams contracted COVID-19 for the second time in a month after he posted to his social media accounts that he was receiving treatment in an Italian hospital after testing positive at the Milan Malpensa airport.

On October 30, he missed the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony where he was booked to perform “It’s Only Love” with H.E.R. as part of a Tina Turner tribute. He was replaced by Keith Urban. Bryan Adams is booked to perform at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada on New Year’s Eve.
