Beloved Detroit MC and Bruiser Brigadier Danny Brown dropped by the 33 1/3 album breakdown podcast hosted by Prince Paul to discuss a seminal album from one of his favourite artists.

Low by David Bowie became the subject of an impressively deep and informed conversation between the rapper and producer which examines the album as Bowie’s first music without narrative philosophy.

Named after the famous short form non-fiction books and produced officially by Spotify, the partially narrative podcast retells the events that led to the creation of the record and allows Brown and Paul to give personal accounts on their relationships with Bowie’s music.

Stanny called Bowie his creative “rabbit hole” when creating new music.

Brown discussed his favourite Bowie records as Station to Station and Heroes over Low and said he is less partial to the Ziggy Stardust era of Bowie.

He ruminated on the album’s controversial instrumental Side B to which Brown wondered, “Why is there no singing on this? Is it just beats?” Later, he formulated the unlikelihood that any MC would ever release a half instrumental album.

On the subject of Kraftwerk’s Radioactivity, as a major touchpoint of influence, Brown attributed Dilla as his gateway to Berlin.

At one point in his signature liberating cackle, Brown, who has been known to delve into intoxicants for creative inspiration, expresses his wish to hear the drunk studio sessions of Bowie and Iggy Pop in Berlin.

Brown’s love for Bowie is nothing new. He discussed his fascination of Blackstar with Pitchfork calling it “fucking creepy” and the music videos relatable. Brown also loves Arcade Fire, Talking Heads, and Flaming Lips.

It’s a whale of a good podcast. Listen to and save it below and check out our history lesson on Low.
