Mitski’s Laurel Hell Demos Sure Sound Like Classic Mitski

Uploaded like bootlegs to YouTube, some fans are pointing out similarities between the demos and Puberty 2 and Be the Cowboy despite considering the finished product a departure.

Laurel Hell, the long-awaited 6th studio album from Mitski, was released a month ago to a fairly divisive response. However, even cynics will have a hard time denying that Laurel Hell in its raw form sounds a lot like classic Mitski. Three demos, plus one cover, were released on the Rough Trade Records exclusive CD. There's good news for those who aren’t able to get it or didn’t know it even existed: the demos have been uploaded to YouTube by a private user. Listeners get to hear the demo versions of "Stay Soft," "Love Me More," and "Valentine, Texas" plus a cover of Lily Chou Chou’s "Glide."

These demos illuminate that Mitski’s signature melodic composition and painful subject matter remain intact, despite the mirage that maximalist song production may create initially. Commenters have pointed out that the demos sonically resemble older Mitski albums, like Be The Cowboy or Bury Me At Makeout Creek. These demos serve as proof that Laurel Hell is the conceptual completion of juxtaposing painful relationship dynamics in the bombastic style that started with songs like Happy on Puberty 2, and Me and My Husband on Be The Cowboy. The maximalist track production on Laurel Hell allows for both insight and exorcism in a way that is both entirely familiar, yet entirely fresh for Mitski.
