Frank Ocean is getting taken to the woodshed over the first night of his weekly club event. Named after the HIV prevention medication, Prophylaxis, PrEP+ promised to pay “homage to what could have been of the 1980s’ NYC club scene if the drug… had been invented in that era.”
The inevitable criticism that followed last Thursday's reception was mainly aimed at its lacklustre premise. Dr. Steven W. Thrasher responded with “AIDS isn’t a lifestyle backdrop”, while others questioned the authenticity of the event and its connection to the years of activism spent by the LGBTQ community to get the pharmaceutical FDA approved. The Blonded organization’s attempts to reimagine this footprint were considered haphazard at best with some attendees even having trouble getting their HIV medication through security.
While an official press statement noted that all were welcome, most tickets had been distributed to designated parties by the time the statement was released.. 24 hours before the event. Attendees were then told about the venue, the Knockdown Centre in Flushing, Queens - through email at 7:30pm the following day, two and half hours before the event.
Ocean took to Tumblr this afternoon to address these comments and express his intention to raise awareness about the drug, his thoughts and opinions on the pricing strategies behind HIV medication, and his satisfaction with how his party turned out.
And not everyone hated it, with some getting in on a high brow dance party in an old glass factory that paid tribute to 80s NYC nightlife. Arca was there, Kevin Abstract may or may not have been there, and Justice (who Ocean is currently working with) did a surprise set. Ocean even unveiled what seem to be two new songs, referred to as “influenced by iterations of night life”. A no phone policy stopped fans from leaking too much of Frank's musical offerings when he got behind the DJ booth at 2am.
