Last night The Recording Academy celebrated the career of Prince at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Called “Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince”, the fourth in their annual "Salutes" series. The concert featured a gala of high profile talent performing alongside Prince career span major players. A faithfully restored lineup of The Revolution acted as backing band for most of the night, percussionist and muse Sheila E. served as musical director, and noted Prince project, The Time performed a short set including “Jungle Love” and “The Bird”, two songs immortalized in the iconic Prince film vehicle Purple Rain.
“Let’s Go Crazy…”’s all star lineup, announced earlier this month flexed a variety of superstar level performers of various genres including Earth, Wind, and Fire, Mavis Staples, H.E.R., John Legend, and Beck among many others proving The Purple One’s far reach in influence. Reported by Rolling Stone, artists were given inspired pairings of mostly well known Prince material like H.E.R. and Gary Clark Jr. performing the titular “Let’s Go Crazy” before trading solos on “The Beautiful Ones” and “The Cross”. Foo Fighters ripped through a blistering version of “Pop Life”, before reciting their notorious cover of “Darling Nikki”, a song Prince famously asked the band not to play before slyly taking his own stab at the Foo’s “Best of You” at the Superbowl in 2007. Dave Grohl told a few anecdotes about how he didn’t “think that he (Prince) liked (their version) that much,” before reminiscing about how the two jammed to Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” in an empty stadium.
Elsewhere, Miguel performed “I Would Die 4 U”, Common did a rapped rendition of “Sign ‘O’ the Times”, and Beck sang “Raspberry Beret”. St. Vincent in familiar paranoid funk territory dominated “Controversy” before the entire ensemble came out to do “Baby, I’m A Star”. Noted Prince collaborators, friends, and historians Dave Chappelle and Questlove though present at Sunday's Grammy ceremony did not participate.
